FANTASTIC FABULOUS
Remember Luscious Jackson? I loved them. I thought they were so cool, but they never quite caught on. I guess. By the time they did their most recent CD there were only 3 members of the band left. I miss them.

And I have to stop listening to Cocteau Twins for a little while. They are all I've played since the weekend.
Well, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was exceptionally well done. However, I just couldn't enjoy it. I mean -- so much repression! I hate repression. It annoys me. Following all the rules of society. That is just wrong. While my gay brothers were on the verge of tears I was just sitting there looking at the screen thinking, "Losers! Get a grip!" ...but I know it is a great film and Heath Ledger gives an amazing performance. Tho, I still feel that Joseph Gordon-Levitt did the best work this year in MYSTERIOUS SKIN. I guess that movie was just too harsh for a lot of people to take. And, I was blown away by Philip Seymour Hoffman as CAPOTE. But, Mr. Ledger was exceptional.

Yeah, Heath Ledger and Jake are basically the kind of guys who have a wife and kids, a blue collar job, and get freaky deaky in bathrooms/truckstops in shitty parts of the country. Of course, in real life, truckstop sex wouldn't be so hot- not if you don't want a stinky beard rubbing on your asshole, lol.
It was a very well done movie, but I wasn't that moved by it. Maybe I'm dead inside? Meh
I haven't seen the movie, but I would admit that if the movie was about straight cheating cowboys, well.. um.. maybe I wouldn't see it. or I'd only see it cos of Ang Lee. and yah, Hoffman was fab as Capote.

Joe -- It is worth seeing and I think most serious film critics are calling it the film of the year. Tho, I really need to see THE HIDDEN! ...and the new Woody Allen which everyone says brings him back to full form. ...Haven't heard that in a while But Ang Lee is incredible, but this wasn't really my cup of gay tea.
Karl -- Yes! I do remember hearing them at Mocha and thinking it was such an unusual/cool sound. And, really, that's a big part of the beauty of music.

I'm going to see Brokeback Mountain this Friday, so I'll get back to you on that. But in the original short story, repression and its wrongness was the whole point, the brittle glue that holds the love story together and renders the ending so shattering. Wyoming isn't San Francisco, nohow. And at least in the Proulx story, I didn't get the impression that these were straight guys -- though if it's more fun to think of it as straight cheating action, have a blast. I figured these were gay, gay, gay guys in a situation where gay did not "exist," where gays were the unacknowledged other.
ing -- Yes, and that is the riding theme of Mr. Lee's work. So he was perfect match for the material. It is a great film. Just not for me, I guess. The film presents the two men as being gay. All quite sad, but so very frustrating because one of the two offers an exit strategy but the other won't because of fear. I would rather die than miss out on something as important as true love. ...and, I have to believe it is out there! It just has to be!!!
I liked Luscious Jackson, but I never actually bought any of their stuff. I think I added one of their albums to my Amazon wish list though, so maybe I'll get round to buying something one day!!
Tim -- if you do, get their last CD or their first one. I actually think I like the last one best. I love the song that they did with Debbie Harry.
Ugh, Matt. I ended up at this warehouse party last night, hosted by this graphic novels publisher. Long story short, the Brokeback exodus didn't happen. My friends are Huge Flakes.
I will see the movie, I will. I hope very soon. My roommate wants to go, so. . .
